In feng shui, the front door is one of the most important areas in your home.
It’s where all energy (Chi) enters your home, which means it’s how opportunity, luck, wealth, and good fortune enter your home!
Once that fresh energy enters your home, it begins to circulate throughout your life, helping you bring all of the good things you want to fruition!
This is the basic premise of feng shui – the energy circulating throughout your home will circulate throughout your life.
This is why the front door is the first thing you should pay attention to when it comes to using feng shui in your home.
Which door is considered your front door in feng shui?
In feng shui, the front door is considered the traditional front door of your home. The one that is on the front of your home.
Even if you use another door more often (like your garage door, or side door, or back door), for energy (chi) purposes, the front door is the one on the front of the house, usually facing the street.
Note: If you live in an apartment, condo, or a home that doesn’t have an outside front door, or you can’t do anything about the area on the outside of your door, you can still use these feng shui front door tips on the *inside* of your door! Choose the ones that work best and your home will still have excellent front door feng shui!
Here are the best feng shui front door tips:
1: Paint it a color you love!
In Western Feng Shui, you don’t have to worry about painting your front door red or some other “lucky” color.
Instead, you want to use a color you love!
My front door is a light teal color and it makes me smile every time I think about it.
It’s my very favorite.
If you’d like to welcome bright, happy energy into your home, paint it so that you are happy every time you see it.
If you don’t have a favorite color, you can also choose a front door color based on its feng shui meaning. Check out this post for more information: The Luckiest Feng Shui Front Door Colors [+ Their Meanings!]
2: Clean your front door often!
You can mix a little salt with the water (and a few drops of essential oils, if you’d like!) which helps clear the energy.
While you’re wiping it down, think about removing all of the stagnant, built-up energy.
Visualize new, happy energy entering your home.
3: Keep your porch dirt and dust-free.
Sweep the dirt away from your home so that the old energy doesn’t enter your home.
Also, don’t forget to shake the dirt out of your welcome mat!
This post has more even information about how to feng shui your porch.
And this post explains how sweeping can move stuck energy: sweeping for manifestation (using feng shui while you sweep!)
4: Add a Welcome Mat
Also, think about the symbolism when you choose one — for example, funny “Unless you’re Ryan Gosling or Amazon – go away” mats are hilarious, but not necessarily welcoming. 😉
Think about your mat as the first thing new energy and opportunity see when it comes to your door, and choose one that makes you happy but doesn’t have negative connotations. 😉
5: Add a wreath or other type of happy decoration.
I like to find inexpensive wreaths and decorations in the Target dollar spot, or even seasonal ones at Michaels with a coupon.
That way I can switch out my decorations whenever I feel like it.
Remember to choose one that you love and replace it if it starts to fade or get dirty and gross.
6: Add plants to your porch to attract abundance and new beginnings.
Plants are wood element energy, which means growth and opportunity.
Again, choose plants you love!
You can also place a jade plant on your porch, or inside of your entryway, which is a traditional feng shui lucky plant. Check out this post for more feng shui lucky front door plants!
7: Create safety and welcoming energy.
This means – don’t have things obstructing your front door or hanging down over you as you enter your home.
Also, think about keeping cactus or other spiky plants away from the entrance.
Spiky “dangerous” plants can have a protective quality, which might be fine if you live on a busy street or need extra protection at home to feel safe.
But if things seem to not be happening in your life as quickly as you’d like them to, consider moving them away from the entrance.
8: Add a hollow, metal wind chime.
Wind chimes help stir up the chi (energy), and the sounds help attract new energy and vibration.
Make sure you pick one you like and don’t choose one just because it’s “lucky for feng shui.” 😉 Check out this post for more information about feng shui wind chimes.
9: Add a fountain to your front yard or front entry.
Fountains represent good energy flowing, so make sure if the fountain has a specific water flow direction that the direction flows towards your home.
You can also add a fish tank inside your entryway to welcome the abundant chi inside. This post has more info about feng shui fountains for good fortune and wealth.
10: Make sure your porch light is working and replace the light bulb if it’s burnt out.
Light bulbs represent fire energy, which stokes your abundance and opportunity.
Burnt-out light bulbs anywhere in your home represent stagnant energy – but they are especially important on your porch.
11: Don’t place things on the porch or in the front yard that block your front door.
You want energy to flow freely up to your home, so if something is blocking the door it’s also blocking the abundance and opportunity!
Also, keep the entryway directly inside your front door clutter-free and clean.
This helps the new energy feel welcomed when it enters your home.
12: Keep everything in working order.
If your door sticks, squeaks, or is otherwise difficult to open – oil the hinges or repair them ASAP.
Not only will this help welcome energy, but it also helps YOU feel great when you enter your home.
If you are always confronted with maintenance you haven’t done or something that annoys you, then that’s a good sign that something needs to change.
It affects your energy – which truthfully is even more important than any other energy that enters your space.
Tip: You don’t have to do everything on this list in order for feng shui to work!
Choose one or two easy things at a time and don’t stress! The key to a good feng shui front door is to make sure it’s welcoming and clean. The rest is just icing on the cake!
How to Feng Shui Your Front Door (Frequently Asked Questions)
Is it bad feng shui to have a mirror facing the front door?
Mirrors bounce energy. Ideally, you don’t want a mirror directly facing the front door when you enter because that represents the energy being bounced right back out of the door.
If you can move the mirror so that it’s not directly facing the door, this will help keep the good energy in your space.
If you can’t move the mirror, you can hang a crystal from the ceiling between the mirror and the door to help dispel the energy and keep it in your home.
This post has more info about feng shui tips for mirrors.
Is it bad feng shui to have a staircase directly across from the front door?
A staircase directly across from the door when you walk in your home is similar to having a mirror, it represents the energy flowing directly up the stairs and away from your main living area.
A cure for this is to place a crystal from the ceiling in between the door and stairs to help move the energy around instead of directly up the stairs.
You can also place something eye-catching, like a piece of art or a potted plant, that will help direct the energy away from the staircase.
This helps direct the chi and move the energy towards your living areas and welcome it where you want it to go.
This post has more information about stairs in your entryway.
Is it bad feng shui to have your front door directly in line with your back door?
A back door that is directly in line with the front door symbolizes the energy coming into your home and leaving immediately through the back door.
Again, you can place a crystal in between them (or above the back door) to disperse the energy and keep it in your space.
What color is good luck for your front door?
In western feng shui, you can paint your front door any color you want as long as you find it welcoming and happy. In other feng shui traditions, red is considered a lucky color. It represents fire energy, which is exciting, active, and vibrant.
If you don’t really care what color your front door is, then red is the color for you! If you hate red, however, use a different color. 😄
This post lists all of the feng shui front door colors and their meanings.
Is it bad feng shui to have a wall directly facing the front door?
If you walk into your home and walk directly into a wall, this represents blocking energy from entering your home.
While I don’t believe anything is “bad luck,” obviously some things help the chi move better than others!
To “cure” the blocking wall, you can add art you love, that invites the energy to come in and stay awhile.
You can also add a mirror (not directly across from the door, but next to it if you can) to help bounce the energy into your home and away from the wall.
You can also add plants to soften the wall (if you have room) or hang a curtain to help retain the energy.
What if you live in an apartment and don’t have a front porch or traditional front door?
In feng shui, you use what you’ve got and make the best of it!
Even if your front door isn’t a “traditional” front door that faces the street, your apartment itself has a front door.
Spruce it up and put your own stamp on it.
Keep it clean and well-maintained.
Put out a welcome mat and plants if you can, or even a wreath!
Make your front door a happy space.

What if you rent and can’t paint your front door?
Again, use what you have. You don’t have to paint your front door to feng shui your entryway.
But the rest of the feng shui tips apply:
- Keep your door clean and well-maintained.
- Make sure the light bulbs work.
- Put out a welcome mat.
- Hang a wreath (you can get a wreath hanger that hangs on the door or use a command hook that you can remove).
- Put plants on the porch or inside the entryway.
- Do everything you can to make your space feel like yours.
How can I attract money to my front door with feng shui?
Everything in feng shui, and especially everything we’ve discussed concerning feng shui and your front door, helps welcome wealth to your front door. Money loves good energy and high vibes!
A few other tips you can use to attract money to your front door are:
- Turn your porch light on for 3 hours during the day. This represents turning up the heat on your abundance and stirs up the energy. Essentially, you are “shining a light” on your home and signaling the abundance that it’s time to pay your home a visit.
- Hang Chinese coins on your front door. Chinese coins represent abundance, luck, and financial stability and can be used to draw this energy to your door. This post has more information about using feng shui coins for wealth and good fortune.
- Place 8 coins (of the highest denomination in your currency, so in America, this would be quarters) inside of a red envelope and place it under your welcome mat. This way you’re bringing abundant energy into your home every time you cross the threshold!
