the one thing you should do before you feng shui

Sharing is caring!

When you first start learning about feng shui, it’s tempting to want to do ALL of the things at once.  Most feng shui cures are simple and easy to implement, so you can really make a lot of changes fast.

the ONE thing you should do before you feng shui your home

But what is the ONE thing you should do before you truly start implementing feng shui tips in your home?

DECLUTTER!!

I know, I know.  No one wants to hear it.  But at its core, feng shui is about energy movement.  If energy can’t move around in your space, then the feng shui cures you implement are going to have a harder time working.

In fact, adding feng shui cures on top of clutter might actually amplify whatever problems you’re having!

It’s like painting over mold – the mold is still there and will just take over the paint eventually, or seep further into the wall and make the mold problem worse.  You have to deal with the root of the mold, not just cover over it.

The same is true of feng shui.  If your home is full of clutter, chaos, or things you don’t love, then anything you do to bring more energy into your home is just ADDING more energy! It’s not giving it room to move around.

This is why decluttering is one of the first things manifestation teachers tell you to do.  If you don’t leave space for the manifestation to come, where is it going to go?

If you are clinging tight to something you already have in your life, your hand isn’t open to receive something new.

The same is true of feng shui.  If you want a new partner, a new job, a new home – how will the manifestation come if there’s no room for it?

Let’s say you want to bring more money into your life.  But your wealth corner is FULL of clutter.  Boxes of papers you don’t know what to do with.  Christmas decorations.  A closet full of things that fall out on your head every time you open it.  Can you see how that would contribute to the chaos you’re experiencing with money?

If you want more money, you have to deal with the clutter first.  You can’t just put a crystal on top of all of the clutter and hope it brings you more money.  The amplifying energy of the crystal will just increase the energy of the clutter!

Does that mean you have to declutter the whole house if you want to start using feng shui? NO!!

I know that it might seem REALLY overwhelming to think about decluttering and THEN applying feng shui tools.  But the good news is that you don’t have to declutter the whole house all at once.

You can start small.  Declutter for 10 minutes!  Move the energy around.  Find 27 things you can throw out or move.  Create space!

Not only will you feel better because you are doing something constructive and dealing with things you don’t really want to deal with, but you will start moving the energy around (which again, is the foundation of feng shui!)

This is why one of the easiest feng shui cures you can implement is to move 27 things in your home.  But it’s even better if you can GET RID OF 27 things!

Set a timer on your phone for 10 minutes.  Play some upbeat music.  Grab a box and get rid of 27 things.  Each item counts – even if it’s 27 old receipts or pieces of junk mail.

You can start the process anywhere in your home, but if you want to start applying feng shui tips right away, I recommend:

Starting with the area that bothers you the most.  This will change the energy you feel every time you see that area.

For example, if you hate opening your bathroom cabinet every time you brush your teeth –  clean it up!  It will change your life twice a day!! Every time you brush your teeth, you’ll feel so much better.

Don’t underestimate how much the energy will shift just from that seemingly small thing.

OR

Start with the area of your life you want to change most.

If you want a new partner, you can start in your love area or your bedroom.  Declutter for 10 minutes and THEN apply a feng shui cure to the space.  Then each time you work on the space, declutter a little more.  And as you do it, picture each action you take adding to the results you’re looking for.

Feng shui is all about intention.

If you intend for your space to feel better when you declutter, then it will.

If you intend that the decluttering will lead to more money, then it will!

But you can even just decide to try it and see what happens, and that little sliver of possibility – the possibility that this MIGHT work, will help your manifestations come true.

Just be open to feng shui working for you, and it will.

Now that you’ve learned the one thing you should do before you start to feng shui your space, consider trying one of these feng shui cures:

  3. Rachel. Any ideas on how to sell a house quickly? I’m into 20 days of 3 6 9 magical writing, decluttered, tossed, and cleaned the place… ty

    1. It sounds like you’re on the right track for sure! I do have this post about selling your home: https://peacelovefengshui.com/feng-shui-tips-for-selling-your-home/
Some other thoughts that just occurred to me: Start preparing now as if your home has already sold – obviously you probably can’t pack everything (and won’t want to) but start a list of what you’ll do immediately after you get the offer you want and start working it. Next (this might be too woo, but maybe not lol) prepare a small thank you offering to your home. Maybe write out a little note to your home, telling it thank you that you are ready to move on. Light a white tea light candle (or whatever you have) for at least a few minutes to help the energy move. There’s also the old home-selling trick of using a St. Joseph statue: https://www.homelight.com/blog/st-joseph-statue-to-sell-house/ because hey, why not try it all?? 😀 Sometimes it really is just about untying your energy to your home, but sometimes it could be the timing for the next buyer is just a bit off. I’d also try affirming the perfect buyer to yourself each day – something like “What if the perfect buyer sees our home today?” and see if it raises your energy and calls them in. HTH!
